FMCG sector is the key contributor of the Indian economy. This fourth largest sector of Indian economy provides employment to around 3 million people. These products are daily consumed by every strata of the society irrespective of social class, income group, age group etc. Revenues of the FMCG sector reached $52.75 bn in FY18 and are estimated to reach $103.7 bn in 2020. There are three main segments - food and beverages, and personal care which accounts for 19%, 31% and 50 % respectively. The urban market contributes 60% and semi-urban and rural segments contribute over 40% of the overall revenues of the FMCG sector in India. Demand for quality goods and services have been going up in rural areas of India, on the back of improved distribution channels of manufacturing and FMCG companies.

The vision behind forming the council is to position ASSOCHAM as a premier organization in promulgating FMCG sector via modern and traditional channels. ASSOCHAM's FMCG council aims to promote emerging trends in FMCG sector, to promote FMCG in rural belt and to focus on building a strong supply chain network.

 

The various stakeholders involved in the council includes government bodies like Ministry of Consumer Affairs and MoFPI, regulatory bodies like FSSAI and Central Drug Standard Control Organisation, representatives from the FMCG industry, retailers etc. Some of the key agendas persuaded are Legal Metrology, FSSAI Labelling and Display Regulations, Advertisement Claims etc.

The core purpose of FMCG council includes Public policy advocacy, Promotion of innovation, Training and Research Programmes, Exhibitions, Conferences along with organising workshops, training programmes, panel discussions, round-table meetings etc.
