National Conference on Scaling up cold chain infrastructure for developing a sustainable food processing sector

  • 19 Jul, 2024

India is the world’s largest producer of milk and second largest producer of fruits and vegetables and has a large production of marine, meat and poultry products. Most of these products are temperature sensitive and henceforth require specific heat or cold measures during storage and transportation. The process involves a series of interconnected refrigeration activities that ensure food products are kept at the right temperature throughout their journey. This requirement has resulted in the establishing of a large cold chain infrastructure in the country.

The complex system encompasses initial cooling after the harvest, temperature-controlled processing, and packaging, refrigerated storage, and transportation, as well as distribution to retailers and consumers. The cold chain system plays a pivotal role in the food processing industry by ensuring the safe storage, transportation, and preservation of perishable food products. In a rapidly evolving global market, a robust cold chain system is essential for preserving food quality, extending shelf life, reducing food waste, and meeting consumer demand for fresh and nutritious products. The development of the cold chain industry is driven by the Indian government, encouraging private participation through various subsidy schemes and incentives.

With a view to develop a vibrant cold chain infrastructure in the food processing sector, ASSOCHAM is organising the National Conference on Scaling up Cold Chain Infrastructure for Developing a Sustainable Food Processing Sector on July 19, 2024, at Hotel Le-Meridien, New Delhi. The conference will catalyse dialogue, collaboration, and strategic initiatives towards enhancing cold chain resilience, enabling growth, and promoting sustainability in the food processing sector. By leveraging technology, policy support, industry partnerships, and knowledge exchange, the conference aims to chart a course for a resilient cold chain ecosystem that supports economic development, food security, and environmental sustainability in India.
