World Mental Health Day- Understanding the right work life balance to avoid mental illnesses

11th October 2022, New Delhi:  ASSOCHAM CSR Council, under the ILLNESS TO WELLNESS initiative, hosted a webinar on World Mental Health Day on "Mental Wellness at Workplace" with the primary goal of promoting awareness and imparting knowledge about Mental Health at Workplace to lead a healthier, happier, and balanced work-life.

 

According to WHO, More than half the world’s population are currently in work and 15% of working-age adults live with a mental disorder. Without adequate care, mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety can have an impact on a person's sense of self-worth and identity at work, ability to perform productively, absenteeism, and ease of retaining or obtaining employment. Work-life balance is crucial for a successful career and advancement, so putting an emphasis on mental health at work is necessary.

 

In her opening remarks, Ms. Ira Trivedi, Indian Author, columnist, and Yoga Teacher said work stress can take a toll on your mental health and Everyone has the right to work in an atmosphere that is both secure and healthful.  Mental health issues at work can be avoided. There is a lot that can be done to safeguard and promote mental health at work as well as to enable those who have mental health disorders to engage completely and fairly in the workforce.

 

She further added that 'human eyes are directly connected to the brain and thus we need to protect it from getting more complication and reducing screen time'. 

 

Ms. Jannat Zubair, Indian actress gave her insights on performance stress and how to deal with the situation when someone is in depression. ''It gets intimidating at work while giving your best, combating your fears and people judging you and your work'', she added. There is a sense of self-doubt, and it is important to talk it out with your friends, family or counselor to cope with the situation. Interpersonal Communication is the key, and one must reach out to closed ones in tough times.  

 

Constant social media use can cause negative emotion including depression, loneliness, jealousy, anxiety, and general dissatisfaction with life. She explained that a digital detox i.e. abstaining from technology and social media can relax your mind. 

 

In his moderation, Dr. Rajesh Kesari, Founder and Director Total Care Control, Delhi – NCR EC Member, RSSDI stated that it is crucial to make people aware about the mental illnesses, stress and how to make mental health a priority. Dealing with mental health issues can lead to a joyful life with happiness state of mind and boost socio-economic activity, he stressed.
