Good digestion defines your overall health says experts while focusing on balanced diet

17th October 2022, New Delhi:  ASSOCHAM CSR Council, under the ILLNESS TO WELLNESS initiative, hosted a webinar on “Good Digestion – Healthy Life” with the paramount objective to cascade awareness and disseminate knowledge about digestive health and nutritional benefits for healthier, happier, and prosperous life.

Digestion is significant because our body derives nutrients from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy by breaking down complex foods into accessible and required nutrients transforming into energy for growth and repair. When we talk about digestive health, we’re referring to the proper functioning of the system. The wellness of human body reflects with a good digestion.

In his welcome address, Shri Anil Rajput, ChairpersonASSOCHAM CSR Council  said without the proper digestive system, the food cannot break down and body cannot absorb nutrients from the food like ammino acids, fatty acids, protein and sugars that provide energy to the human body. A healthy gut leads to improved overall health . It will eradicate the consequences of having stomach ache, liver diseases, bowel problems and so on.

He further added that 'there are more than 100 trillion bacteria living in the gut in order to keep balance'. People with poor digestive system are prone to acid reflux, constipation, heart burn, inflammatory diseases which could be a sign of more serious disorder. More than 40% of the world's population suffer from gastronomical problems, he added.

Dr. Kapil Sharma, Director and HOD, Gastroenterology, Batra Hospitals & Medical Research Centre said digestion involves breakdown of insoluble substances that can be easily absorbed in the blood stream. People should increase the water intake during the day.

Talking about Indigestion, Dr. Pawan Rawal, Head Unit 1, Gastroenterology, Artemis Hospitals said indigestion may be caused by stomach acid coming into contact with the sensitive, protective lining of the digestive system. The stomach acid breaks down the lining, leading to irritation and inflammation, which can be painful.

Nutritionist, author, and diet consultant Dr. Jyoti Singh discussed Whole grains, vegetables, and wheat bran are examples of foods that include insoluble fibre. It gives the stool more volume and seems to facilitate faster passage of meals through the stomach and intestines. Soluble fibre, on the other hand, attracts water into your stomach, softening your stools and promoting regular bowel motions.

In his moderation, Dr. Rajesh Kesari, Founder and Director Total Care Control, Delhi – NCR EC Member, RSSDI stated that your digestive system has a significant impact on your general health since it transports nutrients to your body. You will suffer a variety of painful symptoms, including indigestion, bloating, and stomach discomfort, if your digestive system isn't in good shape, he added. Additionally, you might not receive enough nourishment from the food you consume, which could be detrimental to your health and welfare. This justifies how crucial gut health is.
