National Conference on FREIGHT BY RAIL

Indian Railways is the provider of cost-efficient transportation and logistics systems and it is in progress to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2030. The Indian Railways has successfully adapted itself to the changing needs of travel and transport in the country. It has also absorbed various advancements in the field of railway technology and kept itself equipped continually to meet the growing requirements of passenger and freight traffic. However, there are huge opportunities to increase freight loading and freight earning of Indian Railways. Efficiency and optimization have to be the focus areas in operation. Though there are various challenges on mobility front, improving the operating parameters is of paramount importance. The expanding requirements of the economy will need much faster expansion of the freight network along with its ability to carry larger freight per wagon, improve efficiency of the Rail system to deliver it faster and expand the network.  

The National Rail Plan envisages that the share of freight traffic by rail should go up from current share of 27% to 45% by 2030. The construction of Dedicated Freight Corridors on the important highdensity route is an important policy measure by Indian Railways to arrest the trend of falling market share of railways in the country. Under the newly launched PM GATI-SHAKTI programme, Indian Railways will establish nearly 500 multi modal cargo terminals in the coming years, which is a remarkable and progressive initiative. Therefore, with a view to discussing various opportunities and challenges in increasing share of freight by railways and to attract private investment in various rail projects, ASSOCHAM is organizing a National Conference on FREIGHT BY RAIL- The Way Forward for Achieving 45% Freight Share by 2030 at 10:00 A.M. on February 15, 2023 at Hotel Leela Palace in New Delhi. Smt. Darshana Jardosh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways & Textiles, Government of India have confirmed to address the participants at the Conference. We have also invited Senior Officials from Railway Board for the same. The Conference will bring together all concerned groups and stakeholders to a common platform for sharing valuable experience on the subject.
