Menstrual Health and Hygiene

  • 30 May, 2024

In modern India, where women are increasingly participating in the workforce and striving for economic independence, the lack of access to basic sanitation facilities, clean water, and improper feminine hygiene is a hindrance to their progress. The lack of access to proper sanitation facilities and clean water not only affects their physical health, but also their safety and dignity, and makes it difficult for them to participate in the workforce and contribute to the economic development of the country. Therefore, there is an urgent need for women healthcare and menstrual hygiene in India.

Menstrual health is an important public health. Millions of women and girls worldwide experience period poverty, described as limited access to period products, menstrual education, or adequate water sanitation and hygiene facilities. In addition, cultural norms, stigma, and social taboos surrounding menstruation create further barriers to achieving menstrual health. Menstrual hygiene continues to be amongst the most challenging developmental issues and therefore, poor menstrual hygiene practices affect health majorly leading to recurrent STI/RTIs that further increases risk of cervical cancer. It can also cause serious health risks, like reproductive and urinary tract infections which can result in future infertility and birth complications.

In this regards, ASSOCHAM Goa State Development Council is organising awareness program on Menstrual Health and Hygiene with special focus on Cervical Cancer on 30th May, Thursday from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Nalanda Auditorium, EDC house, Panaji – Goa with an objective to raise awareness and education on menstruation health and hygiene by imparting accurate knowledge with insightful information by medical experts aiming to break social taboo and myths that cause hindrance in the women development and empowerment.
