Cervical Cancer Awareness Month – January 2022: Conference on “Awareness and Prevention of Cervical Cancer”

Globally, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women after breast, colorectal and lung cancer, with half a million new cases and about three hundred thousand deaths annually. Most cervical cancers occur due to many strains of the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection. However, it is preventable, and screening tests and vaccinations that protect against HPV infection can lower cancer risk. Most of these deaths are attributed to cervical cancer, especially in lower- and middle-income countries. In India, about a hundred thousand women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, half of whom succumb to the disease. Moreover, the country contributes about one-fifth of global annual cervical cancer incidence.

The Government of India is taking all the possible measures and initiatives through robust planning and strategic implementation framework in this direction. The World Health Organization (WHO) aims to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, for which 90 per cent of girls must be fully vaccinated with the HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) vaccine by the age of 15; 70 per cent of women screened by the age of 35, and again by the age of 45, among several other measures to be adopted.

The Ministry of Health, Government of India, has introduced Papanicolaou (PAP smear screening), HPV-DNA test, and numerous programs to promote health and healthy lifestyle, generate awareness, and early detection. Effective and accessible screening, early diagnosis and detection, and affordable treatment options should be available to all women to reduce the death rate due to cervical cancer. Further, the country can eliminate cervical cancer by including HPV in the National Immunisation Programme, enhancing health infrastructure in the rural areas, reducing stigma related to cancer, and increasing screening.
