In India, the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector is significant due to its substantial contribution to employment, production, and exports. They contribute to economic diversification by operating in various sectors such as manufacturing, services and technology. They are considered as the backbone of India’s economy. However, these enterprises often face challenges such as resource constraints, limited access to capital, and a highly competitive market environment. In such a scenario, adopting lean manufacturing principles can provide significant advantages for MSMEs. Given the significance of the MSME sector, it is crucial to ensure the competitive position of Indian SMEs, both on the national and international stages. It is therefore essential to enhance competitiveness and productivity of the Indian Industries by reduction of wastage in manufacturing processes, inventory management, space management, energy consumption etc.

Considering the above essential requirements to enhance productivity and competitiveness in MSME, the Government of India has launched the MSME Lean Manufacturing Competitiveness Scheme (LMCS) to enhance the competitiveness of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.
