Good corporate governance practices are a must prescription for sustainable business that generates long term value to all its shareholders and stakeholders. Some of the aspects of good corporate governance tenets are already enshrined in the law of the land and administered by regulatory mechanism of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, SEBI and other sectoral regulators. However, a transparent, ethical, responsible and responsive corporate governance structure takes its roots from the earnest will and desire for right governance ingrained in the business entity. The recent global financial crisis with some of the large format corporate failures and frauds have definitely revealed that  though the corporate governance super structure in India is fairly durable  there are still certain grey areas which need to be revisited for a consolidated and empowered approach as the ethos of individual business entities still has challenging environment.

With a strong and positive approach to work towards strengthening of the corporate governance framework, government has already incorporated certain aspects in the Companies Bill 2009 now under examination by the Parliament. However, keeping in mind the objective of encouraging the use of best global practices through Voluntary adoption, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, has come out with Voluntary Guidelines-2009 which are seen as benchmark for the corporate sector to achieve the highest standards of corporate governance. However there are still certain areas where public debate is needed to clarify and supplement the good efforts of the government as obviously the Voluntary Guidelines would need to be adopted to ensure long term sustainability and value generation by the business as ultimately public sab janti hai  will determine the future of business.

In view of these important and pertinent issues, ASSOCHAM is organizing National Conclave on “Corporate Governance-Voluntary Guidelines 2009 - Bringing Transparency in Corporate Sector” on Friday, 30th July, 2010, at New Delhi. We solicit nominations of officials from your organization and also request to be the Partner / Sponsor for the conference.
