Shri Hardeep S. Puri, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt. of India

India is well on its way to create a world class Mass Rapid Transit System as an integral part of community infrastructure development in the country. Growing cities, growing population and growing traffic has invariably called for a shift from private modes of conveyance to public transport. A glance at the world's developing nations indicates that well planned Mass Rapid Transit Systems exist successfully. India has, however, lagged behind though its first metro, the Kolkata Metro, started working almost three decades ago. The reasons could be attributed to lack of funds and planning as such projects require huge capital investments and a long gestation period, Now India is looking to create a world class infrastructure with its existent Kolkata and Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur, Mumbai and Kochi Metros with the addition of Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Pune, Chandigarh, Kanpur and Bhopal in the next few years.

Worldwide data shows that Light Rail Transport system has been adopted by many countries. Cities with well‐established rail transit systems have significantly higher per capita transit rider‐ship, lower average per capita vehicle ownership and mileage, less traffic congestion, lower traffic death rates and lower consumer transportation expenditures than otherwise comparable cities. It also increases community well‐being by creating jobs, boosting economic development and property values, and reducing pollution and traffic congestion while providing drivers with an economical alternative to the personal vehicle.

Therefore, to discuss these avenues further with the objective of making world class metro system in Indian cities and investment opportunities in this sector, ASSOCHAM is Organizing “International Conference on INDIA METRO & LIGHT RAIL - OPPORTUNITIES FOR GLOBAL INVESTORS” at 10.00 a.m. on February 20, 2018, Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi. Puri, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt. of India and other important government functionaries from concerned departments to address the participants.
