The Indian FMCG sector is the fourth largest sector of the economy with the size of about more than Rs. 500 billion. It has a strong MNC presence and is characterized by a well-established distribution network, intense competition between the organized and unorganized segments and low operational cost. Growing awareness & consumption, coupled with demographic and lifestyle changes, are expected to drive double-digit growth for consumer-focused businesses in India over the next decade. The Government of India's policies and regulatory frameworks such as relaxation of license rules and approval of 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand and 100 per cent in single-brand retail are some of the major growth drivers for the consumer market. Availability of key raw materials, cheaper labor costs and presence across the entire value chain gives India a competitive advantage.

However, issues in supply of inferior quality, delayed supply, unwarranted cost escalation would adversely impact the credibility and business potential of the Indian industry. Amongst many difficulties faced by Indian manufacturers, supply chain disruption management is a major issue, which can result in large tangible and non-tangible losses. Organized and unorganized sectors, GST implementation issues, counterfeiting, consumer protection, weak infrastructure and distribution system are other areas of concern.

Keeping the above issues in the background, ASSOCHAM is organizing its 3rd National Summit & Awards “FMCG 2017 - Branding. Supply Chain. Regulations” scheduled on October 10, 2017 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. The summit will focus on inherent issues like supply chain, consumer protection, quality and safety along with innovation, growth opportunities and emerging markets to meet world standards in the FMCG sector to render ‘Make in India’ initiative a success.
