The exclusion and marginalization of persons with disabilities is a human rights issue as well as an economic issue for countries. Digital technologies break traditional barriers to communication, interaction, and access to information for persons with disabilities. The confluence of increasing public and private service provision through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the growing number of mainstream, everyday ICTs that can be used as accessible devices is changing the paradigm of technology – enabled development for persons with disabilities.

Earlier Persons with Disabilities (PwD) were isolated and excluded from the mainstream sections of society. But now the time has changed – where PwD are no longer treated the same way – Inclusive Development through affordable ICT, would lead to their inclusion into society. Affordable ICT applications create an increase in productivity of PwD and have the potential to generate full employment.

Many persons with disabilities have low incomes and limited educational opportunities. Through promoting the affordable Technologies, PwD may be shifted to mainstream of the Society. There are new affordable technical solutions that can benefit both persons with disabilities and the general community.

Now over 27.35 million People are living with disabilities in India. It is approx 2.32% of total population of India. Our Hon'ble Prime Minister launched “Accessible India Campaign” for PwD on December 3, 2015 and reiterated to focus on adoption of Technologies to empower them.

Technology involves all the communication tools and assistive devices enabling a person with a disability to be independent and an active participant in all areas of the community. Also, 'Accessibility Index' would rate a firm on how differently- able friendly its buildings and HR policies are.

Challenges for persons with disability include the lack of awareness and training on assistive technology, limited accessibility of products and services available and the high cost of assistive technologies, lack of policies that provide accessible ICTs & lack of effective implementation mechanisms. In this regard, role of Corporate Sector is critical in realizing this important goal.Corporate strives to provide services in a manner consistent with the principles of dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity for PwD.

With an objective to bring PwD in Mainstream through Affordable ICT, in Collaboration with stakeholders, ASSOCHAM is organizing the 3rd Annual Conference-cum-Exhibition on “Empowering Persons with Disabilities through Accessible & Assistive Technology” on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Hotel Le-Meridian, New Delhi.
