From humble beginnings to being at the helm of one of the leading Indian integrated infrastructure institutions with global reach, Sunil Kanoria has traversed this journey with integrity and determination as his core values.
A follower of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and the Vedanta philosophy, spirituality has defined Sunil’s personal and work life from the very onset. With foresight and knack for taking calculated risks, Sunil has an enviable proven track record of reshaping the India’s infrastructure landscape. As a result, Sunil is widely acknowledged in the industry for his contribution towards development of India's infrastructure equipment industry.
As the Vice Chairman of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited, Sunil has been instrumental in bringing over Rs. 34,000 crore (over USD 5 billion) of consolidated assets under the company’s management. In 1992, Srei launched its initial public offering (IPO) and was listed on all major stock exchanges. Five years later, foreign development finance institutions such as IFC, FMO and DEG came on board as strategic equity partners. In 2005, Srei became one of the first non-banking finance institutions (NBFIs) to get listed on the London Stock Exchange. Today, Srei in its 25th year, is one of India’s leading Public Financial Institutions. He is also the joint Managing Director of Srei BNP Paribas, a 50:50 joint-venture between Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited and BNP Paribas Leasing Group, France.
Sunil conceptualized the brand ‘Quippo’. Be it launching the country's largest infrastructure equipment rental company or catering to the high growth verticals such as construction, telecom, energy and oil & gas, under his guidance, brand Quippo has become the leader in the equipment rental industry. He envisioned and laid the foundations of independent telecom infrastructure industry in India under the aegis of Quippo Telecom more than a decade ago. He forged a joint venture with Tata Teleservices to form Viom Networks, India’s largest telecom tower company with over 42,000 towers, where he serves as the vice-chairman and managing director.
As a finance expert, Sunil takes active interest in international finance and has been instrumental in attracting investments into India from multilateral and international institutions like BNP Paribas, IFC - Washington, DEG - Germany, FMO - Netherlands, BIO - Belgium, Finfund - Finland, Swedfund – Sweden and US Exim, amongst others. He has been one of the vocal proponents of providing non-banking financial companies or the NBFC industry a level playing field in India vis-à-vis banks and other financial institutions.
Furthering the growth of Indian industry in a responsible and sustainable way is an issue close to Sunil’s heart. With the aim of creating a congenial industry environment, he has been associated with several industry associations, including - governing council member of Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), past-president in Hire Purchase & Lease Association, Kolkata (HPLA), Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce, Kolkata (MCC) and Federation of Indian Hire Purchase Association (FIHPA). Sunil held the prestigious post as a member of the working group on construction for the Tenth Five Year Plan (2002-07) of the Planning Commission, Government of India.
He is currently a council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India as a nominee of the Government of India. He is at present the president of ASSOCHAM, one of the oldest and largest industry bodies in India.
